Under the banner of the International Conference on Open-Source Systems & Technologies (ICOSST) 2021, a student competition “BRAINIAC’22” was organized by Al-Khawarizmi Institute of Computer Science (KICS), UET Lahore with co-sponsorship of IEEE ComSoc Lahore Chapter, IEEE Lahore Section and KICS-UET Lahore on 14-15 December 2022.The competition provided an opportunity for students and fresh engineering graduates to showcase their technical skills and win cash prizes of up to PKR 100,000. A total of 71 teams participated in the competition, representing a wide range of technical expertise and ideas. The competition was organized with the support of financial sponsors IEEE, Advance Systems, and Mortx and Xebex, who provided valuable resources and support to the participants.

The competition consisted of three categories: an artificial intelligence and machine learning coding competition, an Impact startup idea competition, and a logo and branding competition. The artificial intelligence and machine learning coding competition was a challenging and competitive event that tested the participants’ skills in building models to solve problems using machine learning and artificial intelligence techniques. The winner of this competition was Mr. Dawood Tahir, who demonstrated exceptional expertise and innovation in building and evaluating his model.

The Impact startup idea competition was an exciting event that encouraged participants to think creatively and develop user-centric solutions to problems faced in daily life. The theme of this competition was “mission-aligned” tech solutions, and participants could submit solutions in the form of products or services. The winners of this competition were the Matrix team, consisting of Maryam Ejaz, Aabroo Fatima, Atika Abid, and Aima Amjad, who took 3rd place; the Webaccessify team, consisting of Muhammad Ameer Bakhsh, Mehreen Zafar, Sobia Safdar, and Muhammad Nadeem, who took 2nd place; and the Let’s Get Crowded team, consisting of Muhammad Yahya, Danish Azam, and Ali Abdul Rab, who took 1st place.

The logo and branding competition challenged participants to create a logo design and brand presentation based on a given description and samples. The winners of this competition were Sana Abid, Samra Waheed, Bilal Basharaat, and Amna Muneem, who submitted a design and presentation that perfectly fit the description and abided by design principles.

All participants in the Brainiac Student Competition received certificates recognizing their participation in the event. The prize money was distributed at the closing ceremony of the ICOSST conference by the chief guest, the vice chancellor of UET Lahore, Prof. Dr. Syed Mansoor Sarwar. The ceremony was a fitting conclusion to the two-day competition, and the winners and participants were celebrated and recognized for their achievements.

Brainiac Student Competition included a recruitment drive, in which 11 companies came to recruit students from the electrical and computer science departments. This would have provided a valuable opportunity for the students to network with potential employers and potentially secure employment after graduation. It is likely that the students who participated in the recruitment drive came prepared with their CVs and were ready to take part in walk-in interviews. The companies that participated in the recruitment drive included Tekboox, Dynamic Solution, Cogent Labs, i2c, Developers Studio, Crosshair Technology, BrainCord (MetaDort), Learning Hub, Manafa Capital, Devsinc, and Cure MD. These companies represent a range of industries and sectors, and it is likely that they were looking for talented and skilled students to join their teams. The recruitment drive was an additional benefit of the Brainiac Student Competition, and it is likely that it was a valuable experience for both the students and the companies.

Brainiac Student Competition was a success due to the hard work and coordination of a dedicated team of organizers. Mr. Kashif Bashir, Shahid Zulfiqar, Farhan Riaz, Arlsan Siddiqui, Ms Razia, Dr. Rabia, and Ms Iqra all worked together to ensure that the event ran smoothly and successfully.
