Conference Volunteers
Volunteer committees plan the operations and technical content for many ComSoc conferences held in various locations around the world. Use your experience and knowledge in one of these volunteer leadership roles:
Organization (General Chair, Technical Program (TPC) Chair, Industry Chair)
Proposals for hosting IEEE GLOBECOM and IEEE ICC must be submitted to the GLOBECOM/ICC Management & Strategy (GIMS) Standing Committee several years in advance. Proposals for other conferences and workshops are to be submitted to the individual Steering Committees, and typically require a lead time of 1-2 years.
Program (Symposium Chair, Symposium Session Chair, Technical Program Committee Member, Tutorials Chair, Workshops Chair, Panels Chairs, Keynotes Chair)
These positions are appointed by the General Chair, TPC Chair and/or Industry Chair and help create a well-balanced, high-quality program through a rigorous selection and review process. Inquiries for these positions should be sent to appropriate member(s) of the conference organizing committee.
Operations (Finance Chair, Webmaster, Publicity Chair, Patronage Chair, Publications Chair, Local Arrangements Chair, Exhibits Chair)
These positions are appointed by the General Chair and support the conference in various non-program roles. Inquiries for these positions should be sent to appropriate member(s) of the conference organizing committee.
Publications Editors
ComSoc needs enthusiastic editors for its prestigious peer-reviewed magazines and journals. Our volunteers have performed quality reviews for technical periodicals, demonstrated solid technical accomplishments, and have a reputation for high ethical standards and reliability.
Volunteer editors must commit to reviewing at least three manuscripts per year in a timely fashion and have the ability to make firm and fair decisions.
We look for volunteers with the following qualifications: subject matter expertise, editing experience, and technical program committee experience. Applications must submit references and representative papers.
The decision to appoint an editor rests with the Editor-in-Chief of the journal/magazine.
Technical Committees and Emerging Technologies Initiatives
Our Technical Committees define and implement the technical directions of the Society. As a fundamental element of the Society all members are invited – and encouraged – to participate in one or more of its Technical Committees. These committees – networks of professionals with common interests in communications – usually meet twice a year at major conferences. Throughout the year, these committees also play a major role in determining which events (conferences, workshops, etc.) are technically co-sponsored by ComSoc.
Our Emerging Technologies Initiatives are responsible for identifying and nurturing new technology directions through various activities, including the formation of initiatives in emerging technology areas that are of high interest to ComSoc members. Members with common interest in a new technology area are strongly encouraged to form a new initiative with the expectation that such a group may eventually evolve into a full-fledged technical committee under the Society’s Education and Technical Affairs Council (TEAC).
The initiatives organize a range of activities to promote their technical area and may also serve as technical co-sponsors for ComSoc conferences and publications. All ComSoc members are encouraged to participate in ETC initiatives that intersect with their interests, and to propose new ones associated with emerging technologies in the field of communications.
